Oradonna continues family tradition

Wednesday 2 March 2016, 5:32pm

Promising mare Oradonna has continued the proud tradition of one of Queensland's most successful bloodlines by winning her first metropolitan class race.

Oradonna ($1.80) had won her two previous starts in provincial races but progressed to city mid week class with an easy win in Wednesday's Wimmers Class 3 (1000m) at Caloundra.

The mare was bred by the late Jack O'Hagan, one of the Queensland's best known owner-breeders for more than 60 years until his death last year.

Oradonna is a granddaughter of O'Hagan's mare Belle Salieri, winner of the 1997 Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Belle Salieri has proved an exceptional broodmare with seven of her offspring winning about 40 races including top gallopers Belltone, Roman Squire, Belscay, and Lanieri.

Another of her offspring Secret Donna, a mare by Secret Savings, won only one race but she is the dam of Oradonna and Stradon who ran third in the 2012 Queensland Guineas.

"Oradonna was a bit fat at her first run back but she has hit top form now. We will probably look for a fillies and mares Class Six on a Saturday where she will get in with a light weight," trainer Lindsay Gough said.

Jockey Glen Colless again proved himself a good judge of a future racehorse when Flying Labelle ($6) won the Yalumba Three Year Old (1400m).

Trainer Kelly Schweida said Colless had labelled Flying Labelle a likely top flight galloper before the gelding had a start.

"I think Flying Labelle will eventually make a 2000 metre horse," Schweida said.

"Glen did the right thing today by getting off the fence from the inside barrier and he deserves a lot of credit for the win."
