Heavens Above wins G3 Aspiration Quality

Saturday 5 March 2016, 3:32pm

Lightly raced mare Heavens Above has been rewarded for her consistency with a Group Three win at Randwick.

Trained by Tim Martin, Heavens Above went into Saturday's Aspiration Quality (1600m) as the $3.20 favourite based on a win and four placings from her past five starts.

Martin said he was concerned with the lack of early pace but jockey Christian Reith had the situation under control, producing her to make her run from back in the field to overhaul the leader All Cerise ($9) and win a half length.

"I'm a bit disappointed she hasn't won more races but hopefully she will go in with it now," Martin said.

"I was worried that they weren't going hard up front when Hugh Bowman stacked them up on All Cerise and and I was pleased Christian got going early."

Martin said Heavens Above would be aimed at more feature mares' races throughout the carnival.

Reith said he was well aware of the tactics he needed to use.

"She drew a little awkwardly in eight and had to go back a bit further than we wanted," he said.

"From there it was about getting within striking distance.

"We were able to do that which was good and the rest was up to her when we got to the top of the rise. She dug deep and went well."
