Barrier ideal for General Exhibit

Gold Coast trainer Helen Page had to look twice when she saw General Exhibit's barrier for the Channel Seven Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Wide barriers have plagued General Exhibit for much of his career so Page was pleasantly surprised when the gelding drew gate four for Saturday's assignment.

After Tegan Harrison's two kilogram allowance, General Exhibit will carry 54 kilograms, the lightest weight of his seven-start career.

"He's had to contend with a lot of wide barriers and big weights which is a formula for getting beaten," Page said.

"This is the first time in a long time that he's had a decent barrier and a lower weight and he looks to me as though he's got his foot on the till."

Doomben is rated a slow seven for Saturday's meeting as the track recovers from 290 millimetres of rain dumped in the past week as a result of ex-tropical Cyclone Oswald.

Racing Queensland officials postponed the Channel Seven Handicap from Monday's Doomben meeting which was called off because the track was unsafe for racing.

"Waiting a few extra days to run him won't matter. He's done really well since his last run," Page said.

"A wet track won't worry him. He was beaten a head by Heza Jetsetter one day at Eagle Farm on a heavy track and probably would have won if he hadn't laid in at the finish."

Winter carnival plans are on the agenda for General Exhibit with the Queensland Guineas high on a list of options for Page to consider for the gelding.

"I'll probably give him an ease-up after this race but it would be nice to see him win because he's so close to picking up one of these races," she said.

"He's a beautiful horse to train which makes it a lot easier and he's easy to ride in a race because you can ride him anywhere in a field and you know will still finish the race off.

"Last start Tegan had him one out and one back from a wide gate and the start before at the Coast Grant Cooksley went back on him because of the wide gate and he flew home at the finish to be beaten less than two lengths."
