Berry's tribute to Bede after C'ship win

Friday 11 March 2016, 6:07pm

It wasn't on one of Bede Murray's horses, but for leading jockey Tommy Berry it's a win he promises to cherish forever.

Berry brought the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained mare Unequivocal down the outside and into the reckoning for a $400,000 race to win the Bede Murray Provincial Championships Qualifier at Kembla Grange on Friday.

The heat honoured the memory of one Kembla Grange's most famous sons after Murray lost a battle with cancer during the week.

A funeral service for the trainer who had headline racehorses such as Universal Prince and Victory Vein will be held at Milton on the NSW South Coast on Monday.

Berry said Murray was one of the first trainers to recognise the riding talents he shared with his late twin Nathan.

"When Nathan and I started riding, he was one of our biggest supporters," Berry said.

"It's a win close to my heart and one I'll never forget."

Unequivocal ($4) beat the favourite Danish Twist ($2.50) by a half length with Parraay ($11) a short neck away third.

All three progress to the $400,000 Provincial Championships Final at Randwick on April 9.

Murray trained Sure And Fast to win last year's decider and of the three horses that raced in his name at Kembla Grange, Junoesque did best, finishing fifth.
