Tim Clark gunning for Albury Gold Cup win

Thursday 17 March 2016, 12:30pm

Winning the Albury Gold Cup is definitely on jockey Tim Clark's wish list.

And the 29-year-old Sydney rider has a chance of realising his ambition when he rides Gai Waterhouse's Hippopus in the $170,000 race on Friday.

An impressive all-the-way winner of the Canberra Cup, Hippopus again looks able to control the race from the front.

"We were able to pour the pressure on early and make it a true staying test, not just a sprint home," Clark said of the Canberra Cup win.

"That's the way he's best ridden."

The six-year-old gelding has had three runs back since a long injury-enforced lay-off.

Clark, who rides work for Waterhouse, has been assured by the trainer that Hippopus is fit and ready.

"The reports back from the stable have been real positive," Clark said.

"If anything he's improved again. He certainly hasn't gone backwards."

The biggest threats to Clark's chances are Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained Tom Melbourne, and David Hayes and Tom Dabernig's Tashbeeh.

Yet the former Riverina jockey isn't fazed.

"Tom Melbourne looks the danger but all I'm worried about is getting my ride right," he said.
