Trainer Jason Warren is banking on Bel Sprinter's sheer ability to help him overcome the "disadvantage" of the inside barrier at Flemington on Saturday.
Warren expects the well-supported favourite to win the Group Two Gilgai Stakes (1200) but says Bel Sprinter will have to work harder than usual from gate one.
"I would have much preferred to have drawn out wider," Warren said. "I see barrier one tomorrow as a bit of a disadvantage for us."
"With not much speed in the race we'll probably end up leading which is not where I want to be down the 1200 metres straight at Flemington.
"I think our horse is probably better suited at the 1000 and 1100 metres so he's going to very vulnerable late.
"In saying that though I'm hopeful that class will prevail and he'll still be able to win."
Bel Sprinter was a last-start winner at Group Three level in the McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Warren also has the three-year-old filly Proper Madam running in the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) and the Snitzel colt Pronto Pronto in the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1410m).
He said he was heartened by Proper Madam's last-start 10th of 15 runners in the Group Three Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield.
"She just got way too far out of her ground and the tempo of the race was slow so horses back in the field couldn't possibly figure in the finish," Warren said.
"Her sectionals over the last 600 metres were as good as anything in the race so, out to 1600 metres (on Saturday), with a better barrier and blinkers on, hopefully she can be a bit closer to the speed," he said.
Pronto Pronto backs up after finishing fifth over 1200m at Moonee Valley last Friday night.
