Black Heart Bart shoots for Victoria Hcp

Brad Rawiller is confident the training regime employed by Darren Weir will stand Black Heart Bart in good stead at Caulfield.

The former Perth galloper will have his second start for the Weir stable in the Group Three Victoria Handicap on Saturday.

Black Heart Bart finished second to The Quarterback in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on March 12 at his first Melbourne start.

He was coming off a campaign that saw him tried over a middle distance during the Perth summer carnival.

Black Heart Bart has an imposing 1400m record, winning four of his seven starts.

"The 1400 metres is going to be better for him," Rawiller said.

"The only thing is that he's second-up off a blinder in a top race like that.

"They can drop off sometimes but I'm not going out there expecting that to happen."

While he's yet to ride Black Heart Bart in either a race or in trackwork after Damian Lane had the ride in the Newmarket, Rawiller said he has seen plenty of the gelding.

He's been able to keep a watch on Black Heart Bart's progression while riding Weir-trained stablemates.

"He's a horse that has been progressing well," Rawiller said.

"His run in the Newmarket was a credit to the team and Darren Weir to get him to do that over a sprint trip coming off a staying prep."

Black Heart Bart has drawn in the middle of the 16 horse line-up which pleases Rawiller.

"Eight looks a nice barrier for him," Rawiller said.

"I don't think he's one that you'd want to draw one or two on.

"But you never want to draw outside either, so hopefully we'll be able to get a nice position.

"If he gets any nice luck, he should be hard to beat."

Off his first-up second placing in the Newmarket, Black Heart Bart is a $3.40 favourite for Saturday's race ahead of Tried And Tired at $6 and Charmed Harmony at $8.
