Good Friday not a day for racing: V'landys

Thursday 24 March 2016, 4:44pm

Good Friday horse racing won't be on the Australian calendar anytime soon.

Both the Victorian and NSW racing governing bodies have dismissed a Good Friday fixture, admitting the already packed calendar is good enough.

"There are bridges you don't cross," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys told AAP.

"We certainly haven't looked at it, and we're certainly not going to look at it."

Victoria was more open to considering the fixture in future years, but agreed giving people a break was important.

"We race 363 days out of 365, I think that's probably enough," Racing Victoria chief executive Bernard Saundry told the Herald Sun.

The UK introduced Good Friday horse racing in 2014, hoping the break would entice a new audience to the track.

Singapore will host a $1 million open race among its schedule on Good Friday.

If the racing industry decided to host a meeting on Good Friday, it would leave Christmas Day as the only day off for punters.
