Awesome Rock to miss G3 Easter Cup

Friday 25 March 2016, 12:52pm

Trainer Leon Corstens says Easter Cup favourite Awesome Rock will almost certainly be scratched because of his wide barrier.

The Australian Cup runner-up drew barrier 11 of 13 for Saturday's Group Three 2000m race at Caulfield and Corstens said he would bypass the race.

"Every race he's had this preparation he's drawn an outside barrier and I'm just a bit worried it might be too taxing on him," Corstens said.

"I think at this stage we look like getting a run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and all concerned would sooner have a good crack at that."

Corstens, who trains alongside his son Troy, said he would try to organise a race day gallop before the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Sydney on April 9.

Awesome Rock was first past the post in the Group One Australian Cup last start but lost the race on protest to Preferment for shifting out in the straight.

He is at $51 for the Queen Elizabeth (2000m) with the market headed by Cox Plate winner Winx.

"I saw Winx win the other day and I think she's a champion," Corstens said.

"She's going to be a very, very hard nut to crack.

"The race is $4 million so if she pulls up well after the Doncaster I'd say they'd have a crack at it."

But Corstens wants to give Awesome Rock his chance in the weight-for-age feature of The Championships.

"I've always thought that he was a good horse," he said.

"We were a bit stiff with him, as a three-year-old he hurt himself on the walker and split his hock right open.

"I reckon we lost nine months of his racing and I think he's just coming to the fore now."
