Kraftwerk looking to extend his record

Friday 25 March 2016, 2:22pm

Since joining Tony Gollan in Brisbane, Kraftwerk has been a model of consistency with two wins and two minor placings from four starts.

On Saturday, Gollan is hoping he can break new ground and win for the first time beyond 1200 metres when he runs in the Makers Mark Hcp (1350m) at Doomben.

Formerly trained by Leon and Troy Corstens in Victoria, Kraftwerk has run twice over 1400m for a third and a fourth.

He has drawn the outside barrier in the field of six on Saturday but Golland believes the way the race will be run should suit and give Kraftwerk every chance.

"I know it is a small field but it certainly has quality. Sir Moments is a class horse and even with 61 kilograms he looks the one to beat," Gollan said.

"How we go will be a good guide whether Kraftwerk is up to something better in the winter.

"I know everyone is heading to the Weetwood (on April 16) in Towoomba but this is the type of race for him.

"There doesn't look to be any other leader in the race and he should be able to get across and either lead or sit on the pace."

The trainer will test stablemate Trakstar for the Toowoomba Cup on April 16, in Saturday's Coke Zero Hcp (2020m).

"We have been keeping him to 1600 metres but I think the 2020 is his go," he said.

"The 2200 is a bit far for him and the 1600 maybe a bit short. If he doesn't measure up on Saturday we can freshen him up for more 1600 metre races," Gollan said.

Premier Brisbane jockey Jim Byrne will ride both horses with Kraftwerk the $3.50 second favourite behind Group winner Sir Moments ($2.20) and Trakstar a $9 chance in a market headed by Sydneysiders Adorabeel ($4) and Off The Rails ($4.20).
