Black Heart Bart a serious horse: Rawiller

Saturday 26 March 2016, 5:38pm

Brad Rawiller rated Black Heart Bart in a league of his own after the sprinter powered his way to a Group Three victory at Caulfield.

The former Perth galloper was having his second Melbourne start and won the Victoria Handicap on Saturday.

"He's a different grade to this lot," Rawiller said.

"No disrespect to the others, there's some good horses, but he's a serious horse."

After running second in the Group One Newmarket Handicap at his debut run for Darren Weir, Black Heart, the $2.50 favourite, scored by a neck from Charmed Harmony ($12) with Eclair Choice ($20) three quarters of a length away third.

Rawiller said he had no concerns during the race despite carrying 58.5kg and travelling three wide.

"Walking the track I preferred to be three wide with cover than one off the fence," he said.

"And I wasn't worried about the second horse kicking on the turn because this horse is a chaser.

"I actually got to the front before the 100 metres and was hard on him to the line to make sure he kept going."

Weir said he relied on the advice on staff in charge of his Warrnambool stable to run the gelding.

It was Weir's intention to keep Black Heart Bart fresh and head to The Goodwood in Adelaide in May.

"Credit has to go to the boys down at Warrnambool," he said.

"They talked me into running him.

"They said he was that well you should be looking for a race sooner rather than later, so we decided to roll the dice and run."

Weir will consider whether to push Black Heart Bart up in distance or freshen him for the Goodwood.
