Clarry Conners upbeat about team

Monday 4 February 2013, 5:37pm

The Golden Slipper hopes of four-time winning trainer Clarry Conners will become clearer on Tuesday when injured filly Assail undergoes an important test.

A raceday scratching with a stone bruise from last month's Magic Millions for which she was favourite, Assail subsequently had to have much of her hoof removed because of infection.

The winner of her only two starts, Assail remains Conners' main hope for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper on April 6 with second declarations to be paid on Tuesday.

"We change her shoes tomorrow so we will be able to see how much the hoof has grown," Conners said.

"Once we see how the foot is we will be able to get a better idea.

"She is definitely my main Slipper hope unless something else jumps up."

Three of Conners older carnival contenders were put through their paces in barrier trials on Monday at Warwick Farm.

Group One placegetters Decision Time and Satin Shoes both won their heats while Victorian Oaks winner Dear Demi pleased her trainer with her third.

"They all trialled well and the track was amazing after all the rain we've had," he said.

"Dear Demi went really nicely," he said.

"She will just have the one trial and go to the Light Fingers on the 16th, then the Surround three weeks later.

"After that we'll see about the Randwick Guineas as we head to the Oaks."

The program for sprinters Satin Shoes and Decision Time is less clear.

"No-one wants to take on the mare (Black Caviar) in the Lightning Stakes which means a full field for the Oakleigh Plate," Conners said.

"Satin Shoes got knocked over in it last year but it would be a good lead-in to the Newmarket. That's a beautiful race for her.

"If she stays in Sydney there's really only the Challenge Stakes but that's not until the middle of next month.

"Decision Time is in the same situation so I'll just have to go through the calendar."

The injury plagued Decision Time hasn't raced since October 2011 after being given a long time to recover from his latest setback.

With eight wins from 15 starts, Decision Time is a $1.3 million earner, half of that for his second to Crystal Lily in the 2010 Golden Slipper.
