Va Pensiero has foiled a late plunge on All The Talk to take out the two-year-old race at Warwick Farm and fuel the Golden Slipper dream for trainer Jason Coyle.
Backed from $3.20 into $2.60 favouritism, the Gary Portelli-trained All The Talk was posted wide from the outside barrier in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1000m) and had no answer when Va Pensiero ($14) launched his final sprint.
The margin between the pair was a neck with Vela ($14) leading the rest, a further 3-3/4 lengths away.
The win was compensation for Va Pensiero's last in the Breeders' Plate on debut in October when Coyle thought he could perform well.
"I liked him in the Breeders and it was a disappointing result," Coyle said.
"I was confident again today but the 1000 metres was always the query.
"We'll get him home and see how he is over the next two or three weeks.
"He's entered for the Slipper and we'll probably follow a traditional path to get him there."
Va Pensiero joined Coyle out of the blue when his owner/breeder Barry Collins called the Warwick Farm horseman and asked him to train the colt.
"He didn't get sold at the Classic sale and Barry rang and asked if I would train him," Coyle said.
"I didn't know him at the time but was more than happy to take the horse."
Va Pensiero's jockey Christian Reith said he was right up with the best of the youngsters he had ridden this season.
"He has strengthened up a lot since his spell," he said.
"He's a really nice little horse. I really like him and I think he can measure up."
Portelli was not too disappointed with All The Talk.
"They beat the others by a long way," he said.
"It was hard for him from that barrier."
