Memorable birthday for ATC chairman

Saturday 9 February 2013, 5:09pm

It was a birthday to celebrate for Australian Turf Club chairman John Cornish with a timely win by his horse Charge Account at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

As well as being Cornish's birthday, the afternoon was also a celebration of the second anniversary of the Australian Turf Club, the merger of Sydney's two former race clubs.

The $1.60 favourite, Charge Account was a convincing winner over Masterstroke and Chiaramonte in the Happy 2nd Birthday ATC Handicap (1100m).

For Cornish, the victory was even more special as his wife Pam made the trip to the track after battling cancer for the past few months.

Trainer John O'Shea was delighted with the three-year-old's effort to down the older horses.

"He's taken a wonderful step. It was a good performance by the horse and let's hope it doesn't stop here," O'Shea said.

The next race for Charge Account will be the $100,000 Fireball Quality (1100m) in three weeks.

"The plan is to play it by ear," O'Shea said.

The victory also gave jockey Hugh Bowman his third victory of the day following wins by Dark Brown Sugar in the 2013 ATC Membership On Sale Handicap (1300m) and Court Connection in the Sharp Handicap (2200m).
