Veteran sprinter Rain Affair, one of the best horses not to win a Group One race, has been retired.

The eight-year-old finished last in a race at Flemington on Saturday and trainer Daniel Bowman said he had lost interest in racing.

The end of his career comes a year after his original trainer Joe Pride recommended he be retired.

He was sent to Bowman in Victoria in the hope a change of scenery and routine could reignite his career.

He had five starts for Bowman who announced his retirement on Twitter.

"Would like to officially announce the retirement of Rain Affair. Retires sound & happy horse just lost desire for racing. Been a privilege," Bowman said.

Pride trained Rain Affair to multiple Group wins and $1.5 million prize money starting with his debut maiden win in October 2010.

The gelding finished second in four Group One races including two All Aged Stakes.

He had 40 starts for 12 wins and seven minor placings.
