Budriguez scores in Carlyon Cup

Saturday 9 February 2013, 5:58pm

Caulfield has proven a happy hunting ground for South Australian trainer David Jolly for the second straight week with Budriguez scoring an all-the-way win in Saturday's Group Three Carlyon Cup.

The six-year-old's narrow victory in the 1600m contest came on the back of stablemate Avoid Lightning's win in the Listed W J Adams Stakes at Caulfield a week earlier.

"There's been some enjoyable trips over here in the past couple of weeks," Jolly's foreman Adrian Heilmann said.

"He's been a great money-spinner for his owners."

Budriguez ($4.20 equal fav) was taken to the front by Craig Williams and kept finding to notch his 10th career win.

He defeated the fast-finishing Invest ($61) by a neck with Lord Of Brazil ($4.20 equal fav) a long neck away third.

"Craig rated him really well in front and that's the way he likes to be ridden," Heilmann said.

"He's going really well."

The win brought up a stakes double for Williams after his earlier frontrunning victory on Queenslander Adebisi in the Group Three Rubiton Stakes.

Budriguez is likely to step up in journey at his next start and is among nominations for the Group One Australian Cup at Flemington next month.
