Rory Hutchings with two key Domben rides

Wednesday 25 May 2016, 5:12pm

Just a week after outriding his apprentices' claim, Rory Hutchings will have two Group Three rides at the feature Doomben meeting for his boss Chris Waller.

Hutchings remains with Hawkesbury Gold Cup winner Amovatio in Saturday's Lord Mayor's Cup (1615m) and has been given the nod on leading Queensland Derby contender Encosta Line in the Grand Prix Stakes (2200m).

The 21-year-old added another win to his Sydney tally aboard the Waller-trained Avonaco at Canterbury on Wednesday.

He has a seemingly unassailable lead in the in apprentices' title, leading Winona Costin by 28-16 with his indentures to expire on June 14.

"Craig Williams was originally going to ride Encosta Line but he is suspended," Waller said.

"Rory rode him to win at Rosehill last time so he has been rewarded.

"He also won the Hawkesbury Cup on Amovatio so he sticks with him."

Three times the champion apprentice in New Zealand, Hutchings has had mixed fortunes since he settled in Sydney last year, not in small part because of weight issues.

With the help of the Rosehill-based Waller he has got that under control and is ready to spread his wings a little further afield.

After riding work at Randwick earlier this week, Hutchings heads to Newcastle on Thursday for morning trackwork with the Paul Perry and Kris Lees stables.
