Barbass to make city debut at Randwick

Thursday 26 May 2016, 5:36pm

After a trip to Queensland looked on the cards, a change in plans will see Scone Inglis Challenge winner Barbass make his city debut at Randwick.

Cameron Crockett's preference had been to run at Randwick instead of sending the gelding to Brisbane this week for the Sire's Produce Stakes.

But the Mudgee trainer admitted the juvenile's enthusiastic owners had been keen to take the chance of running at Doomben which he admitted was probably "a bit ambitious".

"The guys were pretty excited that they had a chance to run a horse in a Group race," he said.

"None of that decision was made by me but I was happy to do it because they're good owners and he's a fair horse.

"But at the same time I think when it all boiled down, everybody probably started to realise we were probably setting him a bit of a hard task for a two-year-old."

Crockett is convinced the best of Barbass is still 12 to 18 months away and believes while the gelding is still learning and improving all the time, it's suitable to take smaller steps.

"You look at it like being a little kid in school jumping two years in grade," he said.

"Even if they're up to it, it's a bit daunting and can shatter your confidence."

While he knows Saturday's 1400m race for juveniles at Randwick is also not an easy assignment, he believes Barbass will run well.
