Four on the trot for Turnitaround

Saturday 4 June 2016, 1:55pm

Turnitaround has extended his winning sequence to four with a narrow victory at Sandown.

After scoring on firm ground at Flemington last month, Turnitaround proved himself just as at home on rain-affected going with victory in the Ladbrokes Bet Better Handicap on Saturday.

Ridden by apprentice Ben Thompson, Turnitaround was sent out the $3.20 favourite before scoring a half-head victory from Longeron ($4.60) with Sysmo ($6) three lengths away in third.

The Warrnambool-trained Turnitaround has strung together three city wins and a win on heavy ground at his home track this campaign, which trainer Matthew Williams said had opened up options.

"Going into Warrnambool we didn't think he was a wet tracker at all," Williams said.

"His rating is getting up now and with that goes the weight side of it.

"We'll probably head to Moonee Valley in a fortnight and then give him a month off and look at the Coongy Handicap or one one of those second or third tier races over the spring."

Williams said maturity had been responsible for Turnitaround putting together his winning streak.

He said the son of Hard Spun had shown promise as a younger horse but wasn't quite up to Saturday city standard.

"Last prep he didn't come up but his previous campaign was okay without showing Saturday form," Williams said.

"I think the Hard Spun's just need a bit of time and as they mature and get stronger they get better.

"He was a little bit weak behind as a three-year-old but he's come back now and is a nice big, strong horse."

Thompson completed a race-to-race double guiding Magnagem to victory for Robbie Griffiths in the Ladbrokes Handicap.
