Rosie Myers eyeing Brisbane Cup

Tuesday 7 June 2016, 4:08pm

New Zealand jockey Rosie Myers has made a low-key return to Queensland with the Brisbane Cup on her mind.

Myers will partner Benzini in Saturday's Cup after riding him to third in the Group Three Premier's Cup at Doomben two weeks ago.

She has since spent most of her time in Brisbane helping with the preparation of Benzini ahead of his Group Two assignment at Eagle Farm.

Benzini was an entry but not an acceptor for the eventually washed out Eagle Farm Cup on Saturday but Myers said the gelding was primed for the Brisbane Cup thanks to his Doomben run.

"He was entered for the Eagle Farm Cup as a precaution but it wasn't planned he run. His effort in the Premier's Cup was a great Brisbane Cup pointer," Myers said.

She has won five races on Benzini but missed the Auckland Cup ride on the gelding when she injured a leg and spent several weeks on the sidelines.

Myers was reunited with Benzini when he was second in the Canterbury Gold Cup at Riccarton on April 23.

The winner of 10 races, Benzini is trained by kiwis Adrian and Harry Bull who have had several top horses including the Group One winning sprinter-miler Nashville.

"Adrian and Harry do a very good job with their team and Benzini is a most consistent horse," Myers said.

A multiple Group One winning jockey Myers had a successful stint in Brisbane when she was indentured to Kelso Wood.

She returned to New Zealand to be with her partner William Fell who runs Goodwood Stud.

Myers is hoping to pick up some other rides on the 10-race Eagle Farm card and will keep her eye in with two rides for trainer Paul Duncan at Doomben on Wednesday.
