Spieth's Randwick options down to two

Friday 10 June 2016, 2:35pm

Spieth will start a short-priced favourite at Randwick although just which race he runs in is still not clear.

Trainer Bryce Heys has removed one of three options, taking him out of the final race on Saturday's program.

As of Friday afternoon, Spieth still needs two more scratchings to get a start in the Listed June Stakes (1100m) as the fourth emergency.

He was also fourth emergency for the 1200m-Benchmark 78 before his withdrawal and is the topweight for the 1100m-race for three-year-olds.

Despite the uncertainty over where he would start, Spieth opened up favourite in all three races.

He is at $2.50 for the June Stakes (1100m) ahead of the Kris Lees-trained Brook Road who has finished third and fourth behind Two Blue and Kaepernick respectively at her past two starts.

Two Blue and Kaepernick have both made the field for Saturday's Group One Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane.

Among their opposition at Eagle Farm is Bjorn Baker-trained Doomben 10,000 winner Music Magnate.

Baker also has a strong hand at Randwick, with Miss Tenpins one position above Spieth in the June Stakes order and but safely in the field for the race from which Spieth was scratched.

The trainer also has the favourite, Zatopaz, in the Stayer's Cup (3200m).

"Miss Tenpins was one who suffered when the races were called off at Eagle Farm last week so we brought her back to Sydney," Baker said.

"Zatopaz will be having his first start at the distance but he is bred to get the two miles."

By Zabeel, Zatopaz is out of Prized Gem, the winner of the 2002 Brisbane Cup when it was a Group One race over 3200 metres.

Prized Gem was trained by Baker's father Murray Baker as was her first foal, 2008 Australian Derby winner Nom Du Jeu.
