Caviar all the rage - almost

Thursday 14 February 2013, 6:06pm

It appears that not everyone is a fan of Black Caviar.

At odds of $1.05, a record of 22 wins from 22 starts and the title of world's best sprinter, it is hard to imagine anybody would bet against her in Saturday's Lightning Stakes at Flemington.

But as of Thursday evening, TAB fixed odds had received some startling wagers on her rivals.

"The most surprising aspect of the whole race is the level of support for a despised outsider in Spirit Cent," said TAB's Glenn Munsie.

"I might be able to get a taxi home now instead of a train."

Munsie said $66 had been bet on Spirit Cent at $301 to topple Australia's darling of the turf.

The five-year-old gelding has never won in town and his most recent effort was an eighth in a benchmark race at Bairnsdale in October.

But with eight runners in the Lightning and prize money paid down to eighth place, he will take home at least $10,000 for his troubles.

Black Caviar, the winner of 12 Group One races, will take her prize money past $7 million if she wins on Saturday.
