Caviar praised by beaten jockeys

Saturday 16 February 2013, 6:28pm

It was the same old story for the jockeys that had to watch Black Caviar street away from them at Flemington on Saturday.

On the most part they felt their horses had run well, but as has always been the case, the world's best sprinter was in a league of her own.

Glen Boss believed his horse Shamexpress, who finished sixth, felt the heat on the day and never travelled. But it wouldn't have affected the winning result.

"You try to go with her, but we are all at our top and she hasn't let go yet," Boss said.

"Better than ever."

Craig Williams said his mount Satin Shoes "did a great job" for fourth, noting the track record time set by the undefeated champ.

"I remember Special when I was a kid, she was an unbelievable sprinter and Black Caviar broke her record today," Williams said.

Young jockey Daniel Stackhouse has been on the crest of a wave in recent days after his first stakes win at Caulfield last Saturday.

He snared another at Mornington on Wednesday and rode five winners in a row at Sale on Friday.

The Lightning Stakes was his first Group One ride in Australia and Golden Archer made it a Peter Moody trifecta as he came in third to stablemates Black Caviar and Moment Of Change.

"It's pretty hard to beat a champion and to run third to her is a great effort," Stackhouse said.

"You think you are going as good as her and then she just takes off and leaves you for dust. It's amazing."

Linda Meech said Moment Of Change, himself a Group One winner, was on target for the Newmarket Handicap.

He got closest to Black Caviar on Saturday, finishing 2-1/2 lengths off her.

"She's just a freak and it's too hard to beat her," Meech said.

"She doesn't look as though she's going as fast as she is. But you're thinking you're on a genuine Group One horse yourself and she's running away from you."
