Track record for Australia’s adored Black Caviar

Saturday 16 February 2013, 9:36pm

With 22 wins from 22 starts, including 12 at Group 1 level, it was hard to imagine Black Caviar eclipsing her previous feats. But the great mare went to another level again on Saturday, breaking Special’s 25 year-old 1000m track record at Flemington when winning the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.

The victory was Black Caviar’s third in Australia’s most prestigious 1000m dash, a race that not only carries her name but also forms the first leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. Today’s winning time of 55.42 seconds was 0.08 quicker than the previous track record time recorded by Special in the same race on 13 February 1988.

Peter Moody trained the first three across the line in Saturday’s Group 1 and the Caulfield based horseman was clearly relieved to see his stable star back in such dazzling form in front of an adoring 27,047 strong crowd.

“It's good to have her back. I said to my girls that it was the first time I've been nervous in a long time. I suppose it was the seven-month break,” said Moody.

The six-year-old daughter of Bel Esprit was making her long awaited return to racing since a dramatic victory at Royal Ascot last June.

“We were on a hiding to nothing by bringing her back, the job was done and we thought it was over [after Ascot] but to come back and do that and run a record, I'm lost for words.

“I'm just so proud of her. She is just a good news story and I am very grateful for the owners who are prepared to share her with everyone. I think that is very understated in this whole story.

"Imagine having something this good and sharing it with every bugger in Australia. They are true blue Aussies, aren't they,” Moody quipped.

Black Caviar ($210,000 2008 Premier, 6m Bel Esprit-Helsinge) is raced by G J & Mrs K J Wilkie, Werrett Bloodstock P/L Synd (Mgr: N Werrett), C & Mrs J Madden, P Hawkes & D M & Mrs J Taylor.

Moody purchased the undefeated superstar at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Swettenham Stud, which were offering the powerful youngster on behalf of breeder Rick Jamieson’s Gilgai Farm.

The 2013 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes was Black Caviar’s sixth Group 1 victory at Flemington. The win also puts her equal with Sunline and Tie The Knot on 13 Group 1 career victories, only one behind Australian record-holder Kingston Town.
