Hay List to run in Randwick barrier trial

Sunday 17 February 2013, 2:11pm

Hay List has been added to the field for an 800m barrier trial at Randwick on Monday as the outstanding sprinter moves closer to a comeback to racing after illness and injury.

Trainer John McNair decided on the hit-out after Hay List had a gallop at Gosford on Thursday, his third raceday outing in two weeks.

The Randwick trials were rescheduled to Monday after a wash-out last week, affording McNair the opportunity to give the sprinter a hit-out on the course proper.

McNair still plans to run Hay List in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on February 26 ahead of a start in the Group Two Challenge Stakes 11 days later.

"He has come up a bit quicker than we thought," McNair said.

"After his gallop at Gosford I rang Colin Tuck at the ATC to see if we could get him into the trial at Randwick so that's where we're going."

The winner of last year's Newmarket Handicap, Hay List was rated the second best sprinter in the world for 2012 behind Black Caviar.

He hasn't been seen since running second to three-year-old Foxwedge in the weight-for-age William Reid Stakes in March.

The seven-year-old has won 15 of his 23 starts including three Group Ones, but his career has been restricted by injury and feet problems.

His latest setback was the most serious with the gelding injuring his leg when he slipped as he tried to stand up after an emergency colic operation in April.

McNair and his wife Sue have nursed him back to health at their NSW Central Coast property.

His owners, the Davenport family, made the decision to put him back in work but McNair emphasised he was, as always, a day to day proposition.

"We have had the chiropractor to him because he has had a bit of a sore back after he trod on a rock," McNair said.

"He's needed massage. His feet are always a concern and we monitor them closely."

Those vexing issues aside, McNair says he has been pleased with Hay List's rehabilitation and the way he has handled his workload.

"His action is good," he said.

"The aim is to get him to the Challenge Stakes and go from there."

The Group Two Challenge Stakes (1100m) is at Warwick Farm on March 16.
