It took less than fifty seconds for Whiskey Allround to prove to trainer Tony Gollan he was on target for an autumn carnival campaign in Sydney.
Gollan has named the Group Two Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on March 2 as the comeback race for Whiskey Allround whose Doomben barrier trial win last Tuesday earned rave reviews.
The winner of all three of his race starts will be accompanied on the trip to Sydney by his Group One winning stablemate Temple Of Boom who will prepare to defend his Galaxy title.
Whiskey Allround won his barrier trial by nearly nine lengths, running 49.73 seconds for the 820 metres, with his final 400 metre split in a sizzling 22.20s.
"I asked Ric (McMahon) to give him a shake-up because our plan is to go first up in the Silver Slipper so I wanted him to have a good hitout and see where his fitness levels were at," Gollan said.
"When he let down he put a space on them and even though he was plated he ran comparable time to the open company horses which is usually a great sign for two-year-olds.
"He had a bit of a blow afterwards but I think he was shocked more than anything. He thought he was out there for a bit of a walk in the park."
Gollan said the trial was also beneficial for sharpening the gelding's race sense.
"He could have just coasted along and won by a couple of lengths but that doesn't really teach him to be a racehorse," he said.
"Because he's still an impressionable young horse he's got to learn when it's time to get going and we can't afford any chinks in his armour going to Sydney."
Winterbottom Stakes placegetter Spirit Of Boom will fly to Melbourne on Tuesday night to run first-up in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Spirit Of Boom pleased Gollan when he finished second in his 820 metre trial after travelling four deep without cover.
"He had heavy shoes on and they broke 22 seconds for the last 400 metres but he closed off the trial quite good," Gollan said.
The five-year-old will be joined on the flight to Melbourne by Woorim who is attempting to become the first horse since Dual Choice to win the Oakleigh Plate in consecutive years.
Woorim's trainer Robert Heathcote will also nominate the gelding for the Falvelon Quality (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday as a precaution against any transport problems.
