Mrs Onassis confirmed for Oakleigh Plate

Tuesday 19 February 2013, 5:43pm

An impressive gallop from Mrs Onassis at Rosehill has convinced trainer Gerald Ryan to give the mare her chance in Saturday's Group One Oakleigh Plate.

Ryan had thought about waiting another week or two and bypassing the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) but a decision on that was delayed until after the sprinter galloped on Tuesday morning.

"She worked terrific this morning and pulled up good so she'll run," Ryan said.

"My only doubt was tackling a Group One first-up with one trial under her belt but the way she worked this morning, I'm quite happy with her."

Mrs Onassis won a trial at Rosehill by four lengths earlier this month, defeating Oakleigh Plate rival Ortensia.

Wet weather in Sydney after that had Ryan second guessing the sprinter's preparation but any concerns were erased on Tuesday.

Mrs Onassis is due to arrive at Caulfield, the venue for the Oakleigh Plate, on Wednesday morning.

"She's been there before and nothing worries her," Ryan said.

"She's a good mare to travel."

Among her Oakleigh Plate rivals will be the latest sprint star to hail from Western Australia in Barakey.

The unbeaten Barakey has arrived in Melbourne and handled his first interstate trip without any fuss, according to his trainer Jim Taylor.

Coping with the flight across the country was the first hurdle.

"He handled everything good as gold, it was like he'd done it before," Taylor told www.racingvictoria.et.au.

"I'll do some light work with him tomorrow at Caulfield and then do a little bit more on Thursday."

Barakey, winner of all his 11 starts including the Group One Winterbottom Stakes, has 1kg less than last year's Oakleigh Plate winner Woorim and internationally-successful mare Ortensia who'll both carry 58kg.
