A grateful Hugh Bowman has thanked quick-thinking jockey Kathy O'Hara for saving his autumn carnival after escaping serious injury in a race fall.
Bowman's horse Inflatable Miss was looming as a winning chance when it suddenly veered out, causing the leading Sydney rider to part company with the filly in a race at Goulburn on Thursday.
And as he was flung to the track, Bowman seemed certain to be struck by O'Hara's mount who was fighting it out for a placing.
But O'Hara rescued a potentially carnival-ending siutation for Bowman, steering her horse clear of the jockey as he tried to protect himself from the impact of his fall.
O'Hara's split-second reaction earned widespread acclaim from her colleagues.
With the meeting called off straight after the race because of visibility issues, jockeys, including Bowman, took to Twitter to praise the glamour girl of Sydney racing.
"Pleased to say I'm ok after tumble at Goulburn. BIG thanks to @Kathy_ohara for reacting quickly enough to miss me!!!" Bowman tweeted.
Bowman had saved as much ground as possible on Inflatable Miss to put the Guy Walter-trained filly in a winning position before her sidestep at the 200m mark.
The premiership-winning jockey was able to get to his feet but complained of a sore thumb.
Stewards want Bowman to have an X-ray on Friday if he is still troubled by the injury.
Otherwise, he will have to pass a raceday fitness test before riding at Saturday's Silver Slipper Stakes meeting at Rosehill.
Bowman has seven mounts at Rosehill on Saturday, including the talented Gai Waterhouse-trained Proisir who he rides for the first time in the Hobartville Stakes.
In spite of Bowman's scare, winning jockey Brenton Avdulla was able to provide a lighter side to the drama.
"I would like to thank @HugeBowman for jumping off his horse and letting me win race 3 by default!" he tweeted.
"Glad he is ok though!"
