Catkins wins Fireball Quality for Waller

Saturday 2 March 2013, 4:00pm

A determined stakes win by Catkins at Rosehill on Saturday has given trainer Chris Waller food for thought as he plans a bigger target for the autumn carnival.

Catkins ($10) inflicted the first defeat on equal favourite Golden Sunshine ($3.80) in the Listed Fireball Quality (1100m) when she gained the ascendancy by a length after the two went head and head down the straight.

Waller said the three-year-old filly might not race again until the Listed P J Bell Stakes on April 17 but there was also a chance she could be tested at Group One level in the Galaxy on March 30.

"The Galaxy is something to look at for sure," Waller said.

"The P J Bell against her own age might the easier option but I wouldn't dismiss the Group One.

"She has come back in good order and is a strong horse.

"She showed a lot of fight today, especially over the last 100 metres and the wet track played in her favour."

It was the fifth win from eight starts for Catkins and her first experience of a heavy track."

Villa Splendido ($8.50) made a pleasing return for third albeit three lengths from the runner-up.

Equal favourite Charge Account ($3.80) weakened in the wet ground to finish fifth of the six runners, almost five lengths from the winner.
