A recent course record win at Flemington has earned Niconoise the chance to emulate his brother in Saturday's Group One Australian Cup.
Niconoise forms part of a big team for trainer David Hayes on the final Group One day of Melbourne's autumn carnival at Flemington.
Niconoise earned a shot at the Australian Cup (2000m), a race his half-brother Niconero won in 2009, when he ran 1:40.83 for 1700 metres last Saturday week.
"Auld Burns won for us on Saturday and Niconoise killed Auld Burns last start," Hayes said.
"He broke a course record so we thought we'd give it a try."
While Niconoise is Hayes' hope in the feature event, the resurgent trainer is looking forward to unveiling four-year-old spring Cups hopeful Goldoni in a race on the undercard.
The son of Dylan Thomas cost 210,000 guineas at the Tattersall's Horses In Training Sale in England in November.
He was a Listed winner over 2400m at Chester in his most recent start in September.
"I've got my English horse resuming. He's a good one," Hayes said.
"It will probably be too short for him on Saturday. He's a mile-and-a-half horse, but a really good one."
Saturday's program also features the Group One Newmarket Handicap along with seven other stakes races.
"We're without a Newmarket runner but I reckon we'll win the Kewney," Hayes said.
Vanity Stakes winner Alzora and Angus Armanasco Stakes placegetter Red Fez fly the flag for Lindsay Park in the Group Two 1400m fillies event.
"Alzora's form came out in the Australian Guineas." Hayes said.
"The horse she beat last start (You're So Good) came out and ran second in the Guineas."
Two-year-old colt Great Esteem steps up to 1400m in the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes after his debut fifth in the Talindert Stakes (1100m).
And two-year-old filly Bulbula, winner of the Merson Cooper Stakes in the spring, has been targeted at the Group Three Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) after finishing fifth to subsequent Blue Diamond winner Miracles Of Life on Australia Day in a Blue Diamond Preview.
"I've saved her for this and kept her fresh," Hayes said.
