Baster appeals careless riding ban

Monday 4 March 2013, 5:23pm

Australian Guineas winning rider Stephen Baster will have his appeal against what he described as a "stunning" careless-riding ban heard on Tuesday.

But whatever the result, he has lost the Newmarket Handicap ride on Undeniably.

Baster told stewards he had no case to answer when they charged him on Saturday for causing interference soon after the start of the Guineas in which he rode the winner Ferlax.

The stewards duly suspended him for 12 meetings.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh has replaced Baster on Undeniably with the Hong Kong-based Tim Clark.

Kavanagh said on twitter he was disappointed, but needed to make alternative arrangements for his horse who has only 52.5kg, which limits his options.

"Stephen understands," he tweeted.

Baster is also down to ride Niconoise in the Australian Cup.

Clark joins fellow expat Brett Prebble at Flemington on Saturday where the latter is reunited with his Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon in the Australian Cup.
