Foreteller on song for Australian Cup

Wednesday 6 March 2013, 11:52am

Foreteller flies the flag for Chris Waller's new Melbourne satellite stable in the Australian Cup and he could also help launch the Sydney trainer on the international stage.

Waller has taken over 10 boxes at Flemington with Foreteller the only horse Waller has targeted at Melbourne's major autumn races.

Success in Saturday's $1 million Group One Australian Cup (2000m) could also earn Foreteller a shot at the Singapore Airlines International Cup in May, which Waller said was a consideration.

"We'll put a nomination in for Singapore," Waller said.

"Timing-wise it would work in well from here, but we haven't really thought beyond that."

The Australian Cup has attracted a field of 13 headed by Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon who is favourite and the one Waller fears most.

Green Moon returned from a spell with a fourth in the Futurity Stakes.

"I'd say Green Moon is the benchmark for sure," Waller said.

"His first-up run was excellent and obviously he was very fit for that race. He's the one we all have to beat."

Waller already has more than 100 metropolitan wins in Sydney this season and a record total is possible.

He has six entrants in Saturday's Group One Chipping Norton Stakes in Sydney but having a small base at Flemington has also given him the opportunity to keep Foreteller in Melbourne to prepare for the Australian Cup.

The gelding hit form with a win in the Group Two Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.

"Obviously the carnivals down here are so big and it's world stage now so it's important to be a part of it," Waller said.

"We can't do it by just sending horses down and having one-off runs. They need to be set for the races, or for the carnival, and having the stables down here will certainly allow us to do that."

The Australian Cup came into focus for Foreteller after he missed the spring through injury but was ready to race early in 2013.

"It's a big step up on Saturday but all we can do is prepare the horse to what we feel is the best way. I think we've done that and he'll have a great chance," Waller said.

Green Moon heads betting at $3.50 ahead of Mr Moet ($4.60), Super Cool ($6.50), Mawingo ($8.50) and Fiveandahalfstar ($9).

Foreteller is at $11.
