Glencadam Gold given 2kg Cups penalty

Monday 8 October 2012, 3:30pm

Glencadam Gold's win in the Group One Metropolitan has earned him a 2kg penalty to move him closer to a start in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

His handicap is now 53.5kg which lifts him to equal 21st in the order of entry for the Caulfield Cup and 27th for the Melbourne Cup.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, the former English horse is unbeaten in four Australian starts, the most recent two being the Newcastle Cup and Saturday's Group One staying feature at Randwick.

He was originally given 50kg for the Cups before receiving a 1.5kg penalty for winning the Newcastle Cup.

"Two kilograms is the same penalty that I have given to the last three Metropolitan winners in Speed Gifted, Herculian Prince and The Verminator," Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter said.

"Tawqeet was the last horse to win the Metropolitan-Caulfield Cup double in 2006.

"Tawqeet, like Glencadam Gold, was a northern hemisphere four-year-old and was also moved to 53.5kg following his win in the Metropolitan."

Gai Waterhouse's other Group One winner at Randwick on Saturday, Fat Al, has received a 1.5kg penalty in the Melbourne Cup for his Epsom Handicap (1600m) victory.

Fat Al, who is not nominated for the Caulfield Cup, rises from 51kg to 52.5kg in the Melbourne Cup but he has yet to pass the first elimination clause having never won beyond 2000 metres.

Tanby, winner of Saturday's Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington, has been penalised 0.5kg to 52.5kg in both Cups, rising to 34th in the Caulfield Cup order of entry and 45th in the Melbourne Cup.

Third declarations for the Caulfield Cup (2400m) will be taken on Tuesday.
