Autumn stars on show at Warwick Farm

Saturday 9 March 2013, 3:53pm

There were plenty of stars on show at Warwick Farm on Saturday but not all of them were racing.

Sydney pin-up mare More Joyous, Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente, the Queen's horse Carlton House and Group One winner Hay List were all put through their paces in exhibition gallops ahead of their autumn assignments.

More Joyous had a solo gallop with Nash Rawiller aboard, working home her last 600m in 34.95 seconds.

She is due to resume in the Group One Canterbury Stakes (1300m) in two weeks.

"I haven't had a gallop like that in 12 months," Rawiller said.

Glyn Schofield had the same sentiments after Group One-winning sprinter Hay List had his strongest hit-out since his return to work after a serious knee injury.

He completed his last 600m in 33.26s and is due to make his comeback in next Saturday's Group Two Challenge Stakes.

The gallop came a year after his finest moment when he took out the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.

"It was a very nice piece of work," Schofield said.

"John put the blinkers on him for the gallop but he's still pretty casual.

"It was a good sound hit-out in a nice slick time."

Fiorente and Carlton House will only have one or two runs this autumn with trainer Gai Waterhouse to prepare them for spring riches.

Carlton House, who arrived in Australia after running at the International meeting in Hong Kong in December, won the gallop over a Fiorente, another former European.

"Carlton House has been in work the whole time so he had the fitness edge over Fiorente," Waterhouse said.

The George Ryder Stakes and the All Aged Stakes are the races the trainer has in mind for the pair.
