Hay List still a chance for the Challenge

Monday 11 March 2013, 2:08pm

Hay List has had his share of problems but even his trainer was surprised the sprinter's name wasn't among the nominations for Saturday's Challenge Stakes at Warwick Farm.

"Maybe they are trying to make my mind up for me," John McNair said.

After a gallop at Warwick Farm on Saturday, Hay List was found to have heat in a troublesome hoof but his trainer was much happier 48 hours later.

A clerical hiccup meant Hay List's name was left out of the entries on Monday but McNair said a final decision on whether he took his place in the Group Two sprint would be made after Glyn Schofield gave him a work-out on Wednesday morning.

"I'm pretty happy with him today," McNair said.

"It is the same hoof he had an infection in eight weeks ago and I resisted putting a poultice on it because I didn't want to soften it.

"But it is a lot better.

"Glyn will gallop him on Wednesday morning and we'll decide after that whether he runs on Saturday.

"There was a mix-up but I have definitely entered him for the Challenge."

The vet's log book of Hay List's problems fills more pages than most.

He has not raced since his second to Foxwedge in the 2012 William Reid Stakes almost a year ago.

After undergoing emergency surgery for colic in April, Hay List suffered a serious knee injury when he slipped as he was trying to stand after the operation.

The other 15 entries for the Challenge (1000m) include Group One winners Atomic Force , Mrs Onassis and Temple Of Boom.

A decision on whether recent Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis takes her place will be made after she gallops on Tuesday morning.

The original plan was for Mrs Onassis to run next in the Group One Galaxy (1100m) on March 30 but drying weather in Sydney could prompt a re-think.

Her Gerald Ryan-trained stablemate Snitzerland, runner-up in last year's Golden Slipper, will be a Challenge starter along with 2010 Slipper runner-up Decision Time from the Clarry Conners stable.

Golden Archer, who finished third to his stablemate, champion Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes, was also among the entries along with Tiger Tees.

One of two entries for trainer Joe Pride, Tiger Tees has a win over Mrs Onassis to his credit in the Group Three Concorde Stakes in the spring.
