Australia's Horse of the Year Black Caviar will be confronted with another national champion when she makes her Melbourne farewell later this month.
Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy plans to run his former Hong Kong star Good Ba Ba against Black Caviar in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday week.
While no-one, including the ever-optimistic Hore-Lacy, imagines Good Ba Ba will get near Black Caviar, his trainer is expecting the horse who is the highest stakes winner racing in Australia to run well.
The 11-year-old's return to racing earlier this year after 20 months off caused a stir in Hong Kong, but he produced encouraging runs in his first two starts in Australia but then ran only moderately in the Carlyon Cup at Caulfield last month.
Hore-Lacy has had the Doncaster Mile at Randwick as Good Ba Ba's prime target and the William Reid is a step toward that goal.
"He's going better than he has since he came to me, he looks great and every indication is that he is feeling good," Hore-Lacy said.
After the William Reid, the trainer has a Doncaster lead-up run planned in Sydney before the big race on April 20.
Good Ba Ba has earned almost $10 million but hasn't won in more than three years, his last victory coming in the Group One Hong Kong Mile in December 2009.
