The Australian Guineas proved too tough for three-year-old Grand Emperor but his trainer Dean Howard hopes Satruday's Bendigo Guineas will be a different story.
Howard is preparing to take Grand Emperor to Bendigo's stand-alone meeting for the $150,000 Guineas (1400m) after having a throw at the stumps in the Group One Australian Guineas in which the colt finished 11th.
In hindsight he said going to the feature race at Flemington on March 2 was not the right decision as the colt had raced over 1000m and 1200m and then had to jump to 1600m.
And he had to do it all in the space of 22 days.
"He shouldn't have gone around but sometimes you do these stupid things," Howard said.
"I'm looking forward to Saturday. I do think 1400 metres is his pet distance even though his only two wins have been over 1200 metres."
Grand Emperor won in Adelaide last June and scored a city win in Melbourne two starts ago on Blue Diamond Stakes day at Caulfield.
Howard said the son of Written Tycoon had taken no harm from the Australian Guineas which was won by Ferlax.
"He's a lovely horse and he's come through it extremely well. He worked tremendous this morning," Howard said.
Grand Emperor is among 42 nominations for the Bendigo Guineas with a field limit of 16 plus four emergencies.
Last weekend's Listed Flemington winner Crystal Web is among the entries along with the Greg Eurell duo of Force Command and Hosting who were disappointing in the Australian Guineas, finishing ninth and last respectively.
The Bendigo meeting will also feature the running of the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush (1000m) for two-year-olds, the $150,000 Golden Mile (1600m) and the $110,000 Gold Bracelet (1400m).
The Mike Moroney-trained Wall Street is topweight with 60kg for the Golden Mile and is likely to back-up after his luckless third in last Saturday's Group Two Blamey Stakes.
