Bleeding attack ruins Angola plans

Saturday 16 March 2013, 1:18pm

Sydney Cup plans for lightly-raced stayer Angola have been quickly dashed with the gelding banned for three months after winning at Bendigo.

Angola took out the Stayers Gold Final (2400m) on Saturday and trainer Pat Carey revealed plans to test the horse in Sydney in some of the staying features.

But those hopes were dashed as Angola bled from both nostrils, earning the four-year-old a mandatory three-month ban from racing.

Angola was among nominations for the Sydney Cup and the BMW.

Carey has tasted success in the Sydney carnival in the past two years with Cedarberg winning the BMW in 2011 and Ethiopia taking out the Australian Derby last year.

Angola won Saturday's race by a length from Aggregator with three lengths to Unchain My Heart in third.

It was the first leg of a race-to-race double for jockey Damian Lane who also scored on three-year-old Melting Pot in the PH Property Handicap (1000m).
