Rex Lipp's decision to delay the racing career of Tinto was rewarded when the first starter scored a stunning win in the Sky Racing Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
Lipp had to wait until the scratching deadline this morning to learn Tinto ($17), the third emergency, had gained a start but was confident the filly would measure up despite her lack of experience.
"I had her in work early in the season thinking she might be a Magic Millions filly but she's very immature and laid-back so I put her out and let her develop," Lipp said.
"I said to the owners we'd have a go at this race provided we could get into it and I didn't want to run her beforehand because she wouldn't have been ready.
"We had to take pot luck and get three scratchings to get into the race but it's been worth it."
Lipp will give Tinto another short break before aiming the filly at black-type company during the winter carnival.
Apprentice Priscilla Schmidt followed Lipp's instructions to ride Tinto patiently before bringing the daughter of Red Dazzler with a well-timed finish to defeat the favourite Going Going Gone ($3) by a length with Total Authority ($26) a similar margin away third.
"Rex said if I can get her to travel she should finish off the race and that's how it panned out," Schmidt said.
