Listed race likely for Hellova Street

Tuesday 14 March 2017, 5:50pm

The strength of the Blamey Stakes nominations has Tasmanian trainer Scott Brunton looking to a Listed race on the same Flemington program with Hellova Street.

Brunton has Hellova Street nominated in Saturday's Group Two Blamey (1600m) and also the Listed My Kitchen Rules Stakes (1400m).

The 12 Blamey Stakes nominations are highlighted by the Darren Weir-trained multiple Group One winner Black Heart Bart along with his dual Flemington Group One-winning stablemate Palentino, while last year's winner He Or She is also among the entries.

Brunton said with those horses entered it was enough for him to be looking at the easier Listed race in which he believes the gelding looms as a terrific chance with 56.5kg.

Acceptances are taken on Wednesday morning.

"I haven't accepted in the 1400 or the Blamey yet. I was going to wait until the morning, but I'm 90 per cent sure I'll be going to the 1400," Brunton said.

Hellova Street has won the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) at Hobart and the Listed Mowbray Stakes (1600m) at Launceston at his past two starts.

Before those two races, he finished a half-length second to Burning Front over 1600m at Caulfield, with the Darren Weir-trained galloper winning another four-straight since.

Brunton believes the penny dropped with Hellova Street that day at Caulfield and said the gelding was doing everything right ahead of his scheduled trip back from Tasmania by ferry overnight on Wednesday.

The Listed 1400m race has attracted 18 nominations with Kenjorwood heading the weights with 60kg.

"He has had three-and-a-half weeks between runs and done really well since Launceston," Brunton said.

"He's a horse that's had a lot of trouble with injuries with his feet but he seems to be over the worst of it now.

"He's had a really good preparation. He got beaten by Admiral a couple of times early when I felt he was probably a little bit stiff, and he has managed to bounce back and win the Thomas Lyons and the George Adams which are the two good weight-for-age races in Tassie over the carnival.

"I'm looking forward to getting back over there with him to have a crack at it."
