Jim Byrne knows the benefit of getting a second opinion.
Byrne hurt his back at the Ipswich meeting on Friday but arrived at the Gold Coast confident he was fit to fulfil his book of rides.
"One whipped around on me going to the barriers at Ipswich and I pinched the nerve in my lower back," he said.
"Obviously I couldn't ride for the rest of the day and it ended up costing me a winner but I thought I'll just take a painkiller and I'll be right to ride at the Coast."
But after failing to gain a clearance from the club doctor, an undeterred Byrne left the track and drove to the nearby Pindara Private Hospital for a second opinion.
"I said to the club doctor 'trust me I'm good' but he said `no' so I went up the road to the hospital and when I explained what the problem was they had a look at me and gave me the all clear," he said.
Despite arriving back at the Coast races $400 lighter in the pocket for his medical expenses, Byrne soon recouped his losses by winning the Australian Insurance Solutions Handicap aboard Frisco Lights.
Ironically Byrne's success was at the expense of Jeff Lloyd who stood down from the meeting after experiencing dizziness at the Sunshine Coast races last Thursday.
