Mick Mair takes aim at Gold Coast Stakes

Thursday 16 March 2017, 1:19pm

Mick Mair has long been one of the dominant trainers on the Sunshine Coast but lately has made his mark at the other end of the south east Queensland tourist strip.

Mair was a successful trainer when based at Warwick Farm in Sydney but moved to Caloundra 30 years ago and has had hundreds of winners since.

His best known horses include the Oakleigh Plate winner Swiss Ace and the prolific winner Burglar of Bamff who beat the champion Vo Rogue in a Doomben Lord Mayor's Cup.

In the past month Mair has travelled several horses 150km to the Gold Coast where he has had three winners from his past five runners.

He will saddle up Fast Arrow, a last-start winnerat the track and distance, in the $100,000 Gold Coast Stakes (1800m) on Saturday.

Fast Arrow has been a consistent performer for Mair and his wife Belinda, who owns the gelding.

The six=year-old has won eight races and more than $150,000.

"He carried 61 kilos when he won at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres at his last start and drops seven kilos here," Mair said.

"He has been honest and tries all the time."

Fast Arrow showed his class as a younger horse when third to top galloper Hofpgarten in the 2014 Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas.

"This is harder than he has had to face for a while but he will like the distance and his wet track form is good," Mair said.
