Trainer Stuart Kendrick has thought long and hard about setting Divine Centuri and Margin Trader for the feature double at the Gold Coast.
Kendrick spent days going over the form of the opposition and the likely race patterns before committing to run the pair on Saturday.
Divine Centuri will back up in the Listed Goldmarket Stakes (1200m) after a second last Saturday while Margin Trader will tackle the $100,000 Gold Coast Stakes (1800m).
Kendrick was pleased with Divine Centuri's second behind Pinch River at Doomben and equally pleased with the way she came through her second run back from a long spell.
The mare was an acceptor in last year's Doomben 10,000 but was injured the day before the Group One race.
"I had a good think before I accepted with her but it is a good race for her and I am happy she can back up in a week," Kendrick said.
"She has had two runs back from an injury-enforced spell. So she will be fitter now and it isn't the strongest Goldmarket we have seen," Kendrick said.
"As is the case with all mares you are always looking for black type and this is her chance to get some more."
Divine Centuri is already a valuable broodmare having won the Listed Mick Dittman Plate last season.
Kendrick said the unknown was how Divine Centuri would handle a really wet track.
"But she is bred to handle it being by I Am Invincible out of an Encosta De Lago mare.," he said.
Margin Trader has been good at his past two starts, running a close second in a Benchmark 75 race before winning a Class 4 (1800m) at Eagle Farm last start.
Kendrick accepted with Margin Trader in both the Benchmark 75 (2200m) and the Gold Coast Stakes.
"Again I had a good think about it over the past few days. But in the end I thought a wet track and 2200 metres might be a bit hard at this stage of his campaign," he said.
"I know it is a step up in class in the Gold Coast Stakes but on his best Victorian form he won't be out of it."
Margin Trader, who was formerly trained by Mike Moroney, has has won up to 2500m in Victoria and Kendrick has high hopes for him later this season.
Kendrick is having his best season since moving to Caloundra from Mackay four years ago and is second on the state premiership with 60 winners.
