Ortensia a chance for Singapore trip

Sunday 17 March 2013, 6:33pm

Ortensia's international career may not be over just yet with the Singapore's KrisFlyer Sprint in May on the radar.

The mare acquitted herself better than anyone, including trainer Paul Messara, could have imagined in 2012 with Group One wins in three countries.

She won the Winterbottom Stakes in Perth before a stunning victory in the Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai.

Her five starts in England produced a win in the Nunthorpe Stakes and a Group Two win at Goodwood.

Ortensia returned to Australia late in the year and has been unplaced in two starts in recent weeks in the Oakleigh Plate and the Newmarket Handicap.

But trainer Paul Messara said Ortensia retained her zest for racing and put her Newmarket effort down to interference she suffered mid-race.

"She's a bit stiff still from the Newmarket," Messara said.

"The aim is to get her to the TJ Smith and after that the KrisFlyer is a possibility.

"It depends how she is but it's there if she is going well."

Messara is not giving up on three-year-old Vadashan either with the colt still a hope of making it to the ATC Australian Derby.

He was unplaced as favourite in a 1900m race at Canterbury on Wednesday which Messara selected after Vadashan's failure on a heavy track at Rosehill.

"He's also a bit sore. Nothing serious but he's feeling his muscles," Messara said.

"But we haven't given up on the Derby and the plan is to go to the Tulloch Stakes and take it from there."

The Group Two Tulloch Stakes (2000m) is at Rosehill, a week before the 2400m Derby.

Saturday's Randwick Guineas winner It's A Dundeel is shading Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar for Derby favouritism with the latter to run against the older horses in the Ranvet Stakes.
