The lightly raced but highly talented Jacquinot Bay is on a mission to complete the Newcastle Newmarket-Doncaster double last achieved in 2005 by stable predecessor Patezza.
But to get into the $2 million Doncaster Mile on April 20, Jacquinot Bay will have to win Wednesday's Group Three 1400m race.
Trainer Guy Walter, who produced a history-making trifecta when Patezza beat Court's In Session and Danni Martine, has no doubts Jacquinot Bay can be competitive in the famous race, if he can get him there.
"He needs to be winning a race like this to get into the field and prove his worth of going to the Doncaster," Walter said.
"This will be the biggest test for him but I'm happy with how he is going.
"He will be borderline to get a Doncaster start so he will need to do something tomorrow."
The five-year-old has won six of his seven starts but is on the 52kg limit in the Doncaster, 7kg under weight-for-age, but can earn a penalty with a Newmarket win.
To be ridden by Blake Shinn, Jacquinot Bay was a $7 chance on TAB's fixed odds on Wednesday for the Newmarket with Mahisara the $4.60 favourite.
The Paul Messara-trained Mahisara goes into the race at his first start since his Group Three win in the Sandown Stakes in November.
Jacquinot Bay's preparation began with victory in a 1300m benchmark 80 at Warwick Farm on February 23.
On that occasion, Shinn took the initiative on the heavy track and sent him to the front early in contrast to his normal pattern of getting back and swooping late.
"I thought it was a really good win last time and shows he is not one-dimensional," Walter said.
Group One winner Laser Hawk is topweight for the Newmarket on 59kg with Nash Rawiller to ride.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Laser Hawk beat subsequent Cox Plate winner Ocean Park in the 2012 Rosehill Guineas but missed the spring after having surgery to remove a bone chip.
