Class drop offsets weight for Felines

A massive drop in class is expected to offset a big weight when quality mare Felines returns to Brisbane to race at Doomben.

Trained at Newcastle by Kris Lees, Felines has 60.5kg in Saturday's Open Hcp (1050m) but meets a far inferior field to her two most recent starts.

The five-year-old has competed in elite company in Sydney in her past two starts.

She finished fourth to English in the Group Two Challenge Stakes (1000m) on March 4 and fifth to Russian Revolution in the Group One Galaxy (1100m) two weeks later.

Lees decided the mare was best suited in Brisbane.

"It is a big weight on Saturday but she has been racing well and there isn't a lot for her in the south at the moment," Lees said.

"At this stage she will run at Doomben on Saturday and then come back to Newcastle. I am looking at some of the stakes races during the winter for her."

"She is already a valuable broodmare with a stakes win but more black-type will help."

A Group Three winner of the Concorde stakes last spring, Felines was bred by her owner Gerry Harvey and has already won $408,000 prize money.

The mare is a noted wet track horse with five of her eight wins coming on rain-affected surfaces. Seven of those wins have been over 1000 metres with the other at 1100m.

Although Doomben is likely to be a good surface on Saturday, there will be some sting out of the track because of the recent heavy rain.

Felines also handles dry tracks and has been placed at Listed level on a good surface.

With senior jockey Larry Cassidy to ride, the mare will carry her full weight and gives two kilograms to stakes winning Sydney sprinter Straturbo.
