A long range prediction by breeder Scott McAlpine has come true with the well-bred Chief Joseph scoring an upset win at the Sunshine Coast.
Premier jockey Jeff Lloyd showed he doesn't just win on favourites when he brought Chief Joseph ($41) with a well-timed run to win Wednesday's Pryde's Easifeed 3YO Hcp (1200m).
Chief Joseph is by Drumbeats out of the former smart race mare Truly Brave making him a half-brother to the Group One Queensland Oaks winner Tinto.
Trainer Kevin Kemp picked up Chief Joseph for $35,000 as a yearling and was happy to play a waiting game with the gelding.
"Grania McAlpine owns Truly Brave and I remember her husband (Eureka Stud boss) Scott told me that I hadn't bought a two-year-old. He predicted Chief Joseph would be a late three or four-year-old and he was right," Kemp said.
Lloyd was having one of his rare rides for Kemp and brought up his 107th metropolitan winner for the season.
"Jeff doesn't ride for me often but you get the best when you can" Kemp said.
While Lloyd's career is at a high, fellow jockey Ric McMahon hopes his winning ride on Hirtshals ($3.10) at the meeting can help reignite his.
A former top apprentice and stakes winning jockey McMahon has struggled for quality rides in the past few months.
"I have been pushing around a few slow ones so it was good to get on one with a real chance. She is pretty promising and I hope I can be on her for more winners," McMahon said.
Hirtshals' trainer Brian Smith said McMahon had been riding the filly work and deserved to ride a winner.
"He is a good kid and I hope this gives him the kick along he needs," Smith said.
