Weight's right for Brad Pengelly

Thursday 13 April 2017, 2:58pm

Jockey Brad Pengelly has shown his respect for promising mare Tumbler by committing to ride her at 54kg when she returns at Doomben.

Tumbler makes her long awaited comeback to racing in Saturday's Open Hcp (1050m) in which she has the minimum weight of 54kg.

Trainer Barry Lockwood was expected to use a lightweight jockey on Tumbler but elected to stick with Pengelly when he promised to make 54kg.

Pengelly rarely takes rides under 55kg and he has taken only one other ride for the meeting on the Lockwood-trained Miss Kindilan.

He rode Tumbler when she won at Eagle Farm last year and was on her when she ran second in a Deagon trial last month.

"Brad has got down to 54 kilos twice before for me and both horses won. So let's hope it is three from three on Saturday," Lockwood said.

Tumbler, who has won five of her six starts, was to resume in Toowoomba last Saturday but Lockwood scratched her because of a wide barrier.

"She has drawn perfectly in barrier three on Saturday," he said.

"There are a couple of stakes winners in the field so it will be a good guide for us."

Tumbler will tackle the fillies and mares stakes races in the winter if she races well on Saturday.

"Like everyone else we want black-type for our mares to help with their value at stud. Luckily there are plenty of stakes races for mares in Queensland," Lockwood said.
