Mongolian Wolf scores on Australian debut

Saturday 15 April 2017, 2:49pm

Darren Weir was quick to credit New Zealand trainer Murray Baker and the canny purchasing power of Australian Bloodstock after Mongolian Wolf won the Frank Packer Plate at Randwick.

"I can't take all the credit there. I've only had him for two weeks," Weir said.

Mongolian Wolf ($6) made a winning Australian debut, scoring by 1-1/4 lengths from Veladero ($7.50) with Screamarr ($9) a long neck away in third.

Melbourne Cup-winning syndicators Australian Bloodstock were impressed by Mongolian Wolf's form across the Tasman and he justified that faith in his first run since he trailed Gingernuts by 10 lengths in the New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie last month.

"Luke (Murrell) and Jamie (Lovett) pick the right horses, they get it right more than they get it wrong and they're getting the rewards," Weir said.

"They earmarked this horse three or four weeks ago.

"They said we we're going to try to buy him and he'll be a great Queensland Derby horse.

"The way he won today you'd have to say he's on track for that."

Jockey Brenton Avdulla also played his part for Weir and connections.

"He got into a lovely spot, it was a great ride,": Weir said.
