Tumbler confirms potential in Doomben win

Saturday 15 April 2017, 2:55pm

Trainer Barry Lockwood has always felt his mare Tumbler was something special.

And at Doomben on Saturday she proved it.

Tumbler ($1.90) overcame a slow early pace to storm home and beat Straturbo ($8.50) by a long neck.

It was Tumbler's sixth win from seven starts in a career which has been punctuated by injury problems.

"I think that was the hardest task she has had in her career. It was her first start in open company against a field of seasoned sprinters," Lockwood said.

"But she is something special and imagine what she can do when fully fit," Lockwood said.

"She has had one trial to get her ready and she will strip a lot fitter for that."

Tumbler will now tackle a Class 6 race at Eagle Farm on April 29 before being set for the fillies and mares stakes races during the winter.

Brad Pengelly took one of his few rides at 54kg to ride Tumbler but felt it was worthwhile.

"She has been giving me a good feel for some time and she is obviously very good," he said.

"I hope I can stick with her for the winter," Pengelly said.
